Since inception, South Carolina First Steps has helped nearly 410,000 young children prepare for school through programs that strengthen families, improve children's health and well-being, increase the quality of childcare and early education opportunities, and help transition rising kindergarteners into school. Every South Carolina county has a First Steps office that identifies local needs and collaborative opportunities to help our state's youngest learners be better prepared for school.
Mary Black Foundation (Visit Website)
The mission of the Mary Black Foundation is to improve the health and wellness of the people and communities of Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
The Mary Black Foundation defines "health and wellness" broadly — as complete physical, mental and social well-being. The Foundation devotes the majority of its resources to efforts that address the underlying causes of poor health outcomes in Spartanburg County. The Foundation works to achieve its mission by concentrating its grant making in two priority areas: Active Living and Early Childhood Development. In addition to its two priority areas, the Foundation also awards grants through its Community Health Fund.

Mission: Head Start is a national program that promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families.
Duke Endowment (Visit Website)
The Duke Endowment is a private foundation established in 1924 by industrialist and philanthropist James B. Duke. The Endowment's mission is to serve the people of North Carolina and South Carolina by supporting selected programs of higher education, healthcare, children's welfare and spiritual life.
Children's Service Alliance
The Children's Service Alliance (CSA) represents a unique collaboration of strong community leaders in Spartanburg, South Carolina, who share a vested interest in the education, health and wellness of the area's youth between the ages of birth and 21 years. This collaborative effort has now been formalized through the implementation of a new non-profit group which was officially approved by the state of South Carolina on January 1, 2008.
Member organizations of CSA are: Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, Spartanburg County First Steps, United Way of the Piedmont, Department of Health and Environmental Control, Spartanburg School District Six, Department of Mental Health, University of South Carolina Upstate, Wofford College, Converse College, Spartanburg Community College and Sherman College. The formation of the CSA is a direct result of the Early Education Learning Lab Feasibility Study, funded by the Mary Black Foundation of Spartanburg and conducted by Spartanburg County First Steps. This study focused on the possibility of creating a center that would provide best education practices in instruction and learning for children birth to age six and the professionals who serve them, particularly local early childhood education providers.

Coordinating parent education in the county with trainings monthly, support in reporting county Parents as Teachers data, and supporting a parent educator for each of the 4 Family Literacy sites, Spartanburg Counties Districts 2,4,5,7.

- District Two: serving the Boiling Springs and Chesnee areas.
- District Three: serving the Cowpens and Pacolet areas
- District Four: serving the Woodruff area.
- District Five: serving Duncan, Moore and surrounding areas.
- District Six: serving Roebuck, Pauline, and other rural and urban areas.
- District Seven: serving the City of Spartanburg and areas just beyond the borders.
Middle Tyger Community Center (Visit Website)
Middle Tyger Community Center brings together state and local agencies to support the District 5 Area and adjoining areas of the county. Located in the former Lyman Elementary School, MTCC includes programs ranging from adolescent pregnancy prevention and support for pregnant and parenting adolescents to family counseling, family support services, crisis intervention and educational opportunities for all ages.
Mission Statement: "In the spirit of the Middle Tyger Area's desire to create healthy families, we seek to encourage and assist all citizens to develop solutions to the problems identified in our community and foster collaboration among agencies, people who want to help, and those who need help."
United Way of the Piedmont (Visit Website)
United Way of the Piedmont is a private, not-for-profit organization governed by a local board of volunteers and as such is accountable to the local community. Our services cover three counties: Cherokee, Spartanburg and Union. Our mission is to increase the organized capacity of people to care for one another.
